Mission Statement

The Contemporary Theatre of Boston (CTB) is dedicated to producing theatre that is provocative in the best senses of the word: our goal is to create theatre that is visceral and visual, emotionally charged and thought-provoking, which explores today’s major social issues through the works of our finest playwrights.

This exploration is often focused on productions  of plays that are both dark and challenging, but which strive to offer a redemptive beauty as well as true respect and empathy for the characters being portrayed. A distinguishing trait of CTB productions is an emphasis on visual and aural effects that complement and heighten the impact of the written word – a “cinematic” approach to   theatre. The creative use of music and lighting, as well as dance, spoken word, and choreographed staging all aim to create a total, immersive experience: theatre that inspires theatre-goers     to reconsider their expectations of the theatrical experience.

I first want to comment on the amazing level of detail… ABSOLUTELY SPLENDID!…The carefully crafted imagery, the poetry, intensity…were breathtaking. I have seen The Maids in New York several years ago and I can promise you this, Chris Cavalier's vision and direction BLEW ME AWAY!!...This was one of the best productions I have ever seen. And I do not say this lightly."

On their performance of David Mamet's OLEANNA

Kalaora as Carol, starts off as a timid, dense girl and transforms her into a fierce, vengeful woman. Her tenacity brings life to the role...
